Street Scene – The Process
by Cliff Cramp
Block-in: The goal is to design a pleasing composition in value only. If the Illustration doesn’t work at this stage it is scrapped and a new design is developed. Notice that I’m only thinking of basic shapes at this point and how they relate to each other and communicate the story.
Color pass: I lighten the values of the block-in (1) and glaze color over the illustration. In this image I wanted to play with a warm side of the street and a cool side of the street, with some warms and cools crossing over.
Detail stage: This is where I settle down and add detail. This stage takes the longest and is only achieved if the first two stages are successful.
