I began this illustration as a digital ink sketch using a wide range of values. As usuual, I start with simple shapes and build them into more complex shapes. The goal here is to set the composition and develop a nice range of values. I’m working general to specific throughout the entire process. I like to build the painting up in unison rather than concentratingon one part at a time. I also played with light side vs dark side at this early stage.
The color is glazed in with digital watercolor. I’m trying to set the initial mood with temperature of light. Values get lighter and cooler as they move back in space. It’s at this point that I begin to develop the warm side and the cool side. Then detail and text.
